Rather than upsetting a customer, they should be upset with their own agents and/or IT and invest their efforts in fixing the process to prevent a similar mistake in the future (assuming they consider it significant enough to fix). While I don't necessarily disagree with the advice posted above, if AA tried to boot me from F to Y (not J) on a three-class flight, I'd tell them exactly where to shove it, even if that meant booking a last-minute ticket on another airline.

Flying XXX-JFK-SFO (XXX is somewhere in Europe) in a couple months. I applied an SWU, and XXX-JFK cleared at booking; JFK-SFO was waitlisted since no C space was available.

This morning I was checking my reservations and noticed that my JFK-SFO flight was in there twice, with my original MCE seats and with First, with seats unassigned.

I assumed my upgrade to business had cleared for JFK-SFO (and that the website saying "First" was simply AA IT being AA IT) so called in.

The agent told me that indeed my upgrade had cleared and reissued the ticket.

But I have, in fact, somehow cleared straight into First! There was a recent thread here from someone who found a JFK-LAX award ticket in F priced the same as a "standard" domestic F award (25k miles).
